The film adaptation of the Japanese Manga “Helter Skelter” is set to hit the cinemas this week. The film was directed by Mika Ninagawa, who might sound familiar to a few of our readers, as she has been mentioned before in our previous article “The He(ART) of Japan: Mika Ninagawa, Jessica Lichtenstein“. Mika Ninagawa who is recognized for her technicolored sets and stylized compositions, has casted Erika Sawajiri as the lead of her new movie with supporting actress Kiko Mizuhara. The story line is based on the rise and fall of a top star named Ririko. The fictional character goes through a number of plastic surgery procedures to achieve ideal beauty and receives the ultimate beauty icon giving her fame and success. The plot takes us on wild and colorful journey delving in on both the dark and beautiful side of the Japanese Entertainment Industry.
The character of Ririko subtly parallels with the real life professional career of the singer/actress, Erika Sawajiri. Erika’s career came to a halt in 2007 during an interview, for her then, released movie where she spoke out about disliking her role and gave short answers which were deemed “disrespectful and not of proper Japanese etiquette”. Following this interview there were a few other scandals which would contribute to her long absence in the entertainment industry. Five years later, the outspoken actress/singer is now making a come-back with Helter Skelter and she couldn’t have been a better fit for the strong yet fragile character of Ririko.
